What is a free domain at LXI?
A subdomain is your own name in front of an existing domain. If you choose photostudio-anna, for example, your website is available at photostudio-anna.lxi.be. For visitors, this address works like any other web address: you can share it, print it on business cards, and have it found in search engines.
The address is connected to your free web hosting. The SSL certificate is set up automatically, so your site loads immediately via HTTPS. You can upload files, install WordPress, or build a website with LXI Maker and publish it directly to this address.
Free subdomain or own domain?
| Free lxi.be address | Own domain | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | yourname.lxi.be | yourname.de |
| Price | €0, permanently | Annual registration fee depending on extension |
| Ready to go | Directly after confirming your email | After registration and payment |
| Web hosting | Included, 5 GB | Included in the Free plan, you only pay for the domain |
| Email mailboxes | No | Yes, with webmail |
| Number | Up to 5 in the Free plan | As many as you register |
For a portfolio, a club site, a hobby project, or an initial test, the free address is completely sufficient. Your own domain is worthwhile if you are building a brand, need email addresses with your name, or want to keep the address independently of the provider. Your own name with .de, .com, or .eu
Want to appear with your own domain? Search for your desired name with .de, .com, or .eu in domain search. You see the final price before purchase and pay conveniently via PayPal.
Web hosting for your domain registered with LXI is included in the Free plan. For a free start, secure an address like yourname.lxi.be, permanently free with hosting and HTTPS.
How to find a good name
- Short and unambiguous: A name that is spelled correctly after hearing it once is entered directly more often.
- Allowed characters: 3 to 63 lowercase letters, digits, or hyphens, without a hyphen at the start or end. Umlauts and spaces are not possible, so write “mueller” instead of “müller”.
- No third-party brands: Do not use names to which others hold rights.
- With local reference: For local offers, a place in the name helps, for example cafe-ehrenfeld.lxi.be.
Some names are reserved for LXI. You see immediately at registration whether your desired name is free.
Switch to your own domain later
You can add your own domain at any time. Register it in domain search; LXI sets up web hosting for it automatically. Then copy your website in the file manager or publish your Maker project on the new domain. You can keep your lxi.be address, for example for a test version.
